The Application of Ergonomics in developing countries
Second Ergonomics International conference
28-29 April 2013, El-Aurassi Hotel, Algiers

This conference is considered as an extension of the first conference held in 2012, about ergonomics and its role in prevention and development in developing countries. Among its recommendations was continuing to hold conferences on ergonomics due to its importance in serving the national development on the one side and to its importance in developing ergonomics in developing countries on the other side. For this, came the second Ergonomics International Conference, which will highlight and focus more on the application of ergonomics in developing countries in various sectors: industriy, agriculture, education, health, transport, roads, services, sports, building, tourism and electronic field. As it is known ergonomics is considered to have first been founded in the industrial countries, which have benefited a lot from it, especially in the matter of prevention and development. As for the developing countries including Algeria, they are perhaps more in need to take advantage of the principles of ergonomics. Especially that Algeria is going through a lot of attempts at economic development in order to join up with the industrially advanced countries and Technology which typically require some necessary modifications or compelling changes, both at the level of the hardware or on the human side to adapt to what do exist in reality under the stress and shortages of time and lack of possibilities, along with the accompanied quick changes and the huge social requirements dedicated by the past and increased in accumulation at the present which may pledge evolution towards a better future.
Hence, the question is how feasible it is to apply the principles of ergonomics in developing countries in general, and Algeria in particular and how to benefit from the experiences of both the developed and the developing countries and what are the means that would enable Algeria to benefit from ergonomics as what is going on in developed countries or at least to benefit from the application of certain of its principles as a mean that can be a background to the preventive culture that may have a positive and productive impact on the economic, psycho-social, and health, whether at the level of institutions or community.

As official campaign partner, the Federation of European Ergonomics Societies dedicated the Months of Ergonomics 2012 and 2013 to support the EU-OSHA activity.
In our press interviews, events and professional work we highlighted the importance and benefits of the participatory ergonomics and the added value of the ergonomics approach.

The data, methods and tools ergonomics provide to reduce the human and financial cost of the work-related musculoskeletal disorders and to decrease the ergonomic risk is

good for you, good for the business.

In the closing event the Federation of European Ergonomics Societies was represented by Gyula Szabó, chair or the Communication and Promotion Committee, the FEES material was preaperd by Martti Launis.

The title was The European Social Model “A key driver for competitiveness”. Besides the organisers European organisations like FEES could participate. More than 100 participants were present.

The organisers were:

  • Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) of the European Parliament (EP)
  • European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP)
  • European Agency for safety and Health at Work (OSHA)
  • European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (EUROFOUND)
  • European Training Foundation (ETF)
This was the second seminar organised by the European Parliament about the Social Model.

A general conclusions was that there will always be a role for the Social Model in Europe and for the involved European organisations in this area. Important is the cooperation between the different involved agencies/organisations. More and better education is also essential for the future of Europe.

The four agencies/organisations gave a short presentation about their involvement in the Social Model.

For the paneldicussion two questions were raised by the chairperson. The questions where:

1. How should the European Social Model evaluate in the future?

2. Which new ways of working and learning could contribute to the competion force of Europe?

In general terms and with a political background these questions were answered by members of a panel of the involved organisations and EP members of the EMPL.

In his closing addresss, the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, László Andor, said that this seminar was a good example how European Agencies and European organisations could support the work of European Commission. What should be changed on the Social Model as a new challenge for the future of Europe. Solidarity between the memberstates is essential. Three points are essential:

  • More changes for younger citizens
  • Important moment in relation to the financial opportunities
  • Good working conditions as aim for 2020 and involvement of employers/ employees

Square meeting centre, Brussels, 22-23 October 2013

Chronic diseases and conditions have a substantial impact on the labour market and working life.
This urges the need for effective job retention and return-to-work strategies and interventions.

The European Network for Workplace Health Promotion (ENWHP) conducted a two-year campaign designed to contribute to the implementation of effective workplace health practices, by stimulating activities and policies in European companies to retain and encourage return-to-work of chronically ill employees, and to prevent employees of moving into disability or early retirement. The conference concludes the campaign on promoting healthy work for employees with chronic illness (PH Work), which was simultaneously organised in 17 EU countries.

The conference will present the results of the campaign and good practices, as well as guidelines to set up comprehensive workplace health strategies and interventions for the retention / return-to-work of chronically ill employees. Furthermore, it will discuss the role of the policymakers, and all other stakeholders on a public health and workplace health level. More info…
