WOS2014

The Welding and Ergonomics Symposium 2014 was a joint event of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) C-VIII Health, safety and environment, the Federation of the European Ergonomics Societies (FEES).

Program and presentations to download:

It became clear after an extended discussion that for the near future particular attention should be paid to the further elaborations of best and pragmatic practices for the employers of the content of the welding job and to the circumstances in which that job should be executed.

Particular attention should be also given in this regard to the reduction of static load and unfavourable posture during the welding job.

The symposium agreed to investigate about this more collaboration with other organisations who are involved in this field or related areas.

Symposium message:

Participants of the Welding and Ergonomics Symposium 2014 encourage manufacturers to design and employers and workers to use tools and working environment usable in a safe and healthier way in order to reduce bad and static posture, force, vibration and repetition.

Ergonomics Aspects of Diverse Work Environments

Friday 16th of May 2014, National University of Ireland, Galway

Irish Ergonomics Society

Friday 16th of May 2014, National University of Ireland, Galway

Irish Ergonomics Society

Each year the Irish Ergonomics Society (IES) holds an annual conference in conjunction with its Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Conference provides an opportunity for practitioners, academics and researchers to meet to discuss new applications and developments in the field, both at home and abroad.

In keeping with the theme of the conference, the emphasis will be on Ergonomics and Human Factors issues with respect to diverse thermal work environments. However, this does not preclude contributions in traditional ergonomics areas such as, physical
ergonomics, Work-Related Upper-Limb Disorders (WRULDs), posture assessment, manual handling, shift work, hand tool design or other areas related to the activities of the IES, e.g. Safety Culture, Team Working, Behaviour Based Safety or Macro and Organisational Ergonomics.

In 2014, the event will be organised by the Centre for Occupational Health & Safety Engineering and Ergonomics (COHSEE), a Research Group within the College of Engineering and Informatics at the National University of Ireland, Galway, in partnership with the Irish Ergonomics Society and the University
of Limerick
. The partnership with the University of Limerick (UL) is via NUI Galway – UL Strategic Alliance.

In parallel with the Annual Conference, COHSEE will be hosting a Special Seminar on: Lean Healthcare and Biomedical Systems from the 15-16th May 2014

The goal of the campaign is to prevent accidents and injuries caused by slips and trips. The campaign is aimed at the following economic sectors:

  • food production;
  • metal-working;
  • health care;
  • HoReCa (hotels, restaurants, catering);
  • retail, wholesale (storage).

Alain Piette, Secretary general of the Belgian Ergonomist Society had a presentation on “The burden of musculo-skeletal disorders (MSD)
The work related
musculo-skeletal disorders (WRMSD) are well known by OSH specialists
and are defined by WHO (EU-OSHA 2010). The risk factors are many:
physical, organisational and individual. The increasing burden of MSD
is important and expensive not only for the workers but also for the
enterprises and for the society.

Many workers are
suffering from MSD as still shown by the last European Working
Condition Survey (EWCS) of 2010
(Eurofound): nearly one in two are
suffering of low back pain, four in ten of muscular pain in upper
limbs and one in three in lower limbs. MSD affect workers in all
sectors, men and women and are increasing with age. This EWCS 2010
shows that a lot of work constraints are existing with a high
percentage of workers exposed to these constraints, and especially to
biomechanical factors.

Even if it is
difficult for each enterprise to evaluate costs of MSD, these costs
are often very high and can be divided in direct cost (absenteeism,
loss of productivity and/or of quality, increasing of the workload
for the colleagues not yet suffering of a MSD…) and indirect costs
(loss of knowledge, of skills, turn-over…) which can be estimated
to 2 to 3 times the direct costs. For example, a report on
absenteeism in Belgium evaluates the cost of one absence day to 924€.
This report shows that the absenteeism is increasing more and more
each year, with on average 6 days of absence per worker and per day
for a total annual cost in Belgium estimated to 10.8 Billion €.

The costs for the
society are also very high and increasing: health care, disabled
people, occupational diseases compensation…Examples taken in
France, in Belgium and in Netherlands show the main part taken by MSD
in occupational diseases. From the EU-OSHA report 2010, MSD
represented nearly 40% of occupational diseases in Europe in 2005.

To help people and
especially the enterprises to realize this incredible burden of MSD
linked to the working conditions, we need a specific legislation to
give more visibility to MSD. But more essentially we need an European
OSH strategy to prevent MSD for the workers not yet affected, to
allow workers already suffering of MSD to stay longer at work but
also to help people to come back to work after a long absence due to
MSD. An ergonomic approach of the prevention ie a global approach of
all the risk factors, with the workers’ participation to better
adapt the working conditions seems the only solution to get an
effective MSD prevention.

European Trade Union Institute, etui.
The European Trade Union Institute organised a conference with strong ergonomics interest.

The EU debate on upping the retirement age is meaningful only if it includes working conditions, particularly unequal exposure to hazardous substances and the gender impact on the quality of working life. This is not just something for politicians and the establishment – it affects all workers.
Researchers, public officials, trade unionists and other social stakeholders explored these critical issues at a two-day conference on 10 and 11 December 2013 in Brussels. The conference looked in particular to three areas where the hardships of work are a big issue: building, motor manufacturing and shopwork.

Montréal, October 7-9, 2014
Diverse interventions, diverse populations: What are the issues and challenges facing ergonomics?
The 2014 conference will be delving into the diversity of ergonomic practices: mobilization, assessments, transformation projects, training, advice, research-interventions, etc. Whether our interventions are short or carried out over a longer period, use a systematic approach or concentrate on one specific aspect, how do we help improve work situations and preserve health in the workplace?
As for the growing diversity of the work force, what knowledge and tools do ergonomists use to
keep this shift in mind? While ergonomists have traditionally taken people’s anthropometric
characteristics into consideration, what about the age, gender, immigrant status and job status
of the workers? Are our practices and research adapted to this diversity?
Diversity, whether in ergonomic practice or in the populations we serve, raises numerous issues and challenges. First, what exactly do we mean when we talk about ergonomic interventions?
Evaluating our interventions, for example, is a sizable challenge given the diversity of the practices. Can considering the differences between people lead to discrimination? What intervention strategies should we develop? How does the current ergonomic training prepare
practitioners to meet these challenges? How can research help shed light on the issues affecting interventions in the workplace?
