Main tasks:
Ergonomics

    Physical ergonomics

    • analyse different types of individual and collective workstations, offering advice on an ergonomic approach that is both preventive and corrective
    • adapt workstations to the needs of staff on request, particularly for those with functional limitations
    • contribute to the opinions of the Safety Unit on studies and projects for the development or conversion of workspaces and common areas, and on infrastructure development studies and projects
    • assess and implement measures to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)
    • provide opinions in the field of ergonomics for the drawing up of specifications in connection with the purchase of furniture, office supplies and software, or in connection with the purchase of work equipment (machines) and collective or personal protective equipment
    • contribute to the analysis by the Safety Unit of accidents at work
    • Cognitive ergonomics
    • analyse the ergonomics of IT interfaces and of information and production systems
    • analyse the ergonomics of signage projects

    Organisational ergonomics

    • help to establish a healthy working environment from a psychosocial standpoint
    • conduct surveys and draw up statistics in the field of ergonomics in order to establish priorities in this area
    • contribute to the ergonomic aspects of the plan for the prevention of psychosocial risks within the GSC, including, where appropriate, by analysing work situations

    Communication

    • give presentations and provide information and recommendations for staff on specific topics related to ergonomics
    • contribute to staff training (load handling, working with display screen equipment, etc.).

    Additional tasks:

      Occupational hygiene

      • identify and analyse the physical, chemical and biological risk factors to which staff are exposed
      • contribute to the GSC’s management of the risks associated with chemical agents (toxicology, principles of toxicokinetics and biomonitoring, safety in the management of chemicals, prevention of accidents (explosion, fire, etc.) and occupational diseases, etc.)
      • contribute to the GSC’s management of the risks associated with physical agents (noise and vibration, climate, non-ionising radiation, ionising radiation, lighting, electromagnetic fields, pressure: stress and comfort, etc.)
      • contribute to the GSC’s management of biological risks (infections and allergies, bacteria (endotoxins), viruses, moulds and their derivatives, etc.)
      • help to take measurements

        • apply measurement techniques
        • compile hygiene statistics applied to measurements

        Communication

        • give presentations and provide information and recommendations for staff on specific topics related to occupational hygiene
        • contribute to staff training (training in the management of chemicals, physical and biological risks, etc.)

      Optional tasks:

      • coordination with the Green Office team in the implementation of the EMAS environmental management scheme
      • coordination of quality management in the Safety Unit on the basis of the NBN EN ISO 9001 standard.

      If the successful candidate is not a specialist in the field of occupational hygiene, he or she must be prepared to follow appropriate training at the GSC’s request. 

      Place of work: post in the Safety Unit which is located in the Justus Lipsius building; however, the tasks cover the three Council buildings (Justus Lipsius, Europa and Lex), as well as the crèche as regards GSC staff working there. 
      Fixed working hours, though these are subject to variation in the light of exceptional service needs.

Her/his main task will be to design, conduct and manage in co-operation with some colleagues – research projects on ergonomics with a particular focus on standardization and musculoskeletal disorders and translate the evidence into policy recommendations. The new ergonomist should have a broad vision of occupational health and safety, including the gender dimension and is able to connect his / her field of expertise with related issues, e.g. work organization and psycho-social risks. The job requires to organize workshops, seminars and conferences, and publish research results and information linked with ergonomics activity in ETUI publications, external specialized journals and other media.

The appointment will be for a full-time 3 year-period with possibility for renewal. The ETUI offers a challenging and dynamic working environment, combining excellent professional and academic standards with close contacts to European policy makers.

The IEA/Kingfar Award for Student Research in Human Factors and Ergonomics Issues in Industrially Developing Countries

The IEA/Kingfar Award for Student Research in Human Factors and Ergonomics Issues in Industrially Developing Countries is given annually to honour persons who have made high-quality human factors and ergonomics (HFE) research achievements that address HFE issues typical of industrially developing countries (IDCs). Please note that the applicant could be from any country/region as long as his/her research topic is related to IDC issues. The purpose of the award is to honour a deserving student and allow them to focus their research on HFE issues typical of IDCs and thereby potentially improve the well-being of people in industrially developing countries. Up to eight award winners may be selected each year. Each winner will be given a prize of 1,000 USD.

All areas of ergonomics are eligible for consideration. Examples of submitted proof of research achievements include high-quality journal or conference papers, high-impact HFE designs, or project reports. The following criteria will apply for nomination:

  1. The nominee is a registered PhD student/candidate. The nominee may also be a PhD who has been awarded the degree within the past year.
  2. The nominee is a member of an IEA federated/affiliated society or a self-recommending individual whom the IEA federated/affiliated society agrees to nominate.
  3. The submitted research achievement should be made prior to graduation and should address HFE issues typical of IDCs.
  4. The nomination is made to IEA through an IEA federated/affiliated society.

  1. A nomination letter from the nominating society that justifies the quality of the nominee’s research. Relevance to IDC HFE issues should be included.

  4. Scan copy of the student ID or graduation certificate.

The IEA/Tsinghua Award for Collaborative Human Factors and Ergonomics Education for Industrially Developing Countries

The IEA/Tsinghua Award for Collaborative Human Factors and Ergonomics Education for Industrially Developing Countries is given annually to honour persons who have made significant and outstanding contributions to the success of postgraduate educational programs through international/inter-regional collaboration with the corresponding program. Please note that the applicant could be from any country/region as long as he/she has contributed to the success of the education programs that satisfied the following criteria. Up to four individuals nominated from up to 2 nominating educational programs may be selected. The winners altogether will share 8,000 USD.

The educational program should have a human factors and ergonomics (HFE) course in its curriculum or substantial HFE content in its courses. The educational program should be either from a non-high income country university or from a program in a high-income country whose students have been mainly from non-high income countries with low to medium actual tuition burden (for example, those that offer financial support). The following criteria will apply for nomination:

  1. The nominee should be a member of an IEA federated/affiliated society.
  2. The nominee should be nominated by a related educational program through an IEA federated/affiliated
  3. The recipient should not be an employee of the corresponding educational programs, although a visiting scholar is eligible.
  4. The nominating educational program should have human factors and ergonomics courses in its curriculum or contain substantial human factors and ergonomics contents in some courses.
  5. The nominating program should be either from a university in a low-income or middle-income country or from a university in a high-income country with students mainly from low-income and middle-income countries with a low to medium tuition burden (for example, with financial support available). This award does not consider nominees from high-tuition education programs.
  6. The nominee has not won the proposed award before.
    The nomination is made to IEA through an IEA federated/affiliated society.

The Office Ergonomics Research Committee (OERC) is a consortium of companies who work together to advance ergonomic research in the design and management of knowledge work places, systems, processes, and products. During the past 9 years, OERC has funded about $750,000 in research examining issues related to working with computers.

The IEA/Liberty Mutual Medal consists of a plaque (certificate), medal, and prize ($10,000). Recipients are selected by an international review committee established by IEA.
