The aim of the already traditional students’ competition of the Hungarian Ergonomics Society is to give recognition to those product ideas which make our everyday life easier, more efficient, more comfortable and safe, while safeguarding our health.

The secondary aim of the competition is to attract university students to design products that comply with the requirements of ergonomics, human factors, usability and universal design and create healthy, safe, efficient and easy conditions for life. The applications are evaluated by expert juries from the Hungarian Ergonomics Society and invited experts from other NGOs.

Evaluation criteria for the high-level fulfilment of ergonomic aspects are as follows:

  • assurance of conditions of healthy life,
  • safety in use,
  • effective emergence of ergonomic functions,
  • efficient fulfilment of the overall function,
  • comfort in use,
  • high aesthetic quality.

The winners of the “Student’s ideas for ergonomic day” student competition are below. Students have been invited to participate in the competition with their product ideas not yet introduced into the market since 2012. Note that detailed design have not been requested.

Rake with clamshell, design by Judit Bendig

The winning application of the first turn aimed at facilitating work in gardens. was designed. Thanks to the rake combined with grab by Judit Bendig fallen leaves can be collected and moved without an additional tool, and with less effort.

Contact lens holder, design by Orsolya Olasz

In 2013 the expert jury judged the application by Orsolya Olasz to be the best. The designer intended to alleviate the life of those excursionists wearing contact lens by a combined storing and washing device. Thanks to her new product concept, all the materials and tools necessary for the change and washing of a contact lens can be accommodated in one holder. Due to the small, compact form the device can easily be carried along anywhere.

Waste holder and carrier, design by Katalin Dordevics

The best application in the year 2014 was aimed at facilitating the selective collection and transportation of kitchen garbage by Katalin Gyorgyevics. The sac made of reused textile is the combination of a bin hanged in the kitchen cabinet, as well as an easily transformable rucksack. The device is light, can be accommodated in pocket, thus easy to handle after emptying it.

The competition will continue in the years that come, and on the basis of experiences gained, we will develop and renew it. The next call for applications will appear in February 2015 (in Hungarian: www.e2o.ergonomiavilaga.hu).

The competition is sponsored by the UWH Simonyi Karoly Faculty of Engineering Wood Sciences and Applied Arts Institute of Wood Based Products and Technologies, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungarian Design Council and the Hungarian Ergonomics Society.

Ergonomics programmes at Óbuda University, Budapest, Hungary

The European Conference on Applied Ergonomics, organized by the Hungarian Ergonomic Society and the Ergonomics Sub-Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was hosted by Óbuda University, Donát Bánki Faculty of Mechanical and Safety Engineering.

The
opening address of the conference, consisting of two English-language sessions,
was delivered by Kenichi Hirose, Senior Specialist of the International Labour
Organization (ILO) Country Office for Central and Eastern Europe, on the
occasion that the ILO publication titled “Ergonomic checkpoints: Practical and
easy-to-implement solutions for improving safety, health and working
conditions” was issued in the framework of the teaching material development project of Óbuda University. Conference participants include Sylvain Leduc,
president of the Federation of European Ergonomics Societies (FEES), Maggie
Graf president of the Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists (CREE)
and the presidents of several European ergonomics societies as well.

In the days to follow the conference, Budapest was the venue of the 43rd session of the council of CREE, operating a register of European Ergonomists. Registration is intended to provide contacts to prominent professionals in ergonomics as well as to
strengthen the ergonomist profession itself. A standardized system of
requirements and an assessment procedure of several stages ensure that holders
of the European Ergonomist title have all the competencies required for performing
ergonomics activities independently and at high standards.
The Harmonising European Training
Programs for the Ergonomics Profession (HETPEP), was adopted in 1990 and since
then it has served as a model for a number of standardized European
professional qualification systems, including the titles of European Health and
Safety Technician and European Health and Safety Manager.

The tasks and objectives of the Hungarian Ergonomics Society
The objective of the Hungarian Ergonomics Society is to contribute to enhancing the culture of Hungarian workplaces, work conditions and products. Our Society aims to strengthen the position of ergonomics as a profession to facilitate the emergence of human factors in production, products and services to support the implementation of economic objectives. We provide a professional forum for those involved in ergonomics as professionals and information training and services for users and people interested.

One of our main tasks is to provide information for our members and link them to information channels (in Europe or worldwide). We cooperate with interest representative bodies of the country, public institutions responsible for coordination, and domestic and foreign professional organisations.

One of our tasks is to organise different professional events. We organise the ergonomic summer university annually with international participation and some thematic professional days. We plan to broaden education and set up a round table with higher education lecturers to facilitate high-level ergonomics education. We are launching a harmonised ergonomics training programme of a high standard, providing knowledge and skills in the field of ergonomics with the involvement of domestic and foreign universities.

To develop a professional ergonomic culture, we have established a national committee of the registered Centre of European Ergonomics under the frames of the Hungarian Ergonomic Society, which is preparing and proposing the award of Eur. Erg to Hungarian-speaking ergonomic professionals. We are representing at national level ergonomics as a profession therefore we are members of the International Ergonomics society (IEA) the Federation of European Ergonomics Societies (FEES) and the German Organisation, Gesellschaft für Arbeitswissenschaft (GfA).
